The war’s dangers widened further Monday as concern grew over strikes near Iran’s Bushehr nuclear power plant, the country’s only functioning nuclear facility. Reuters reported that Iran accused the U.N. nuclear watchdog of inaction and warned that repeated attacks risk releasing radioactive material with consequences for people, the environment and neighboring countries.

The International Atomic Energy Agency later confirmed that recent strikes did in fact land near the site. Reuters reported that one strike was just 75 meters from Bushehr’s perimeter, though the agency said the facility itself remained undamaged. Even so, that distance was close enough to transform the issue from rhetoric into a concrete nuclear-safety concern.

Iran’s accusation that the IAEA has responded only with expressions of concern adds another layer of international friction. Tehran is clearly trying to frame the attacks not just as acts of war, but as acts with possible transboundary environmental consequences.
