Ocean County commuters who rely on the North Jersey Coast Line are being warned to expect possible delays as NJ Transit continues track maintenance and deals with additional service disruptions on the line. NJ Transit’s travel alert page says North Jersey Coast Line trains may face weekday delays because of track maintenance, with an updated notice posted Friday, April 3.
That standing advisory comes on top of a separate, more immediate disruption that appeared on NJ Transit pages over the weekend. NJ Transit said North Jersey Coast Line rail service was suspended in both directions between Long Branch and Red Bank after an earlier motor vehicle accident near Little Silver, and later said service had resumed. For Ocean County riders traveling north for work, school, or weekend trips, the back-to-back alerts underscore how vulnerable the line remains to both planned work and sudden incidents.
The transit issue is not confined to one station or one trip. NJ Transit’s advisory pages show the North Jersey Coast Line has multiple maintenance notices in effect this month, including weekend warnings for certain Sundays in April in addition to the weekday delay advisory that began March 16 and was reposted April 3. While the alerts do not list exact station-by-station impacts for Ocean County in the summary text, the line serves Shore communities and connects Ocean County riders into broader regional rail travel.
For local commuters, the timing is difficult. Early April is when more Shore travel begins ramping up, and many residents start balancing spring recreation, appointments, and New York-area commuting with increasingly busy weekend schedules. Rail delays on the Coast Line can push more travelers into cars, compounding congestion on parkway and local road corridors. That spillover effect is an inference from the service disruption, but it is a predictable one in a corridor where public transit and highway travel are tightly linked.
The safest advice for riders is the simplest: check NJ Transit alerts before leaving home, especially for weekday Coast Line travel and any weekend trip heading north of Long Branch. NJ Transit’s current notices show that both routine maintenance and unplanned disruptions are affecting the route at the same time.
